A new camouflage design based on the German Army's flecktarn was introduced in 1991 for issue to the entire Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The pattern features black, brown and grass green dots on a khaki background, and is produced in a variety of uniform pieces (collectively the Mk 2 and later Mk 3 Camouflage Uniforms) as well as field equipment. The pattern is often called Jietai (自衛隊) in reference to the indigenous name for the JGSDF. The desert version was dopted by the JGSDF for Middle Eastern deployments. This CAMO is a desert version of the JGSDF's flecktarn pattern. The first unit using this particular camouflage was the Central Readiness Force during the 4th DAPE (Deployment Air Force for Counter-Piracy Operation) in the Gulf of Aden.
