What Is Swedish M90 Camouflage?

Sweden's Bold Geometric Military Pattern

Swedish M90 is one of the most distinctive military camouflage patterns ever developed. With its bold angular shapes, sharp geometric design, and striking color palette, M90 stands apart from virtually every other camouflage system in the world. Introduced by the Swedish Armed Forces in the late twentieth century, it remains one of the most recognizable national camouflage patterns still in military service today.

Unlike camouflage based on leaves, brushstrokes, or digital pixels, M90 relies on large angular polygons that disrupt the human silhouette while blending into Sweden's forests and rocky landscapes.

Quick Facts

  • Country of Origin: Sweden
  • Introduced: Late 1980s (officially adopted around 1990)
  • Primary User: Swedish Armed Forces
  • Environment: Boreal forest, woodland, rocky terrain
  • Pattern Type: Geometric polygon camouflage
  • Status: Active military service

The Development of M90

During the Cold War, Sweden sought a modern camouflage pattern capable of concealing soldiers within the country's unique terrain of dense pine forests, granite outcroppings, wetlands, and mixed woodland. Rather than adopting brushstroke or spotted camouflage, Swedish designers pursued an entirely different concept based on large geometric shapes.

The result was M90, a camouflage pattern unlike anything previously fielded by a major military.

A Different Philosophy

Most camouflage patterns attempt to imitate leaves, branches, or natural vegetation. M90 instead focuses on disrupting the outline of the human body through bold, angular polygons.

At first glance, the design appears almost abstract. However, at practical viewing distances, the contrasting shapes help break up the wearer's silhouette against the varied textures of Scandinavian terrain.

Color Palette

The classic woodland version of Swedish M90 uses four primary colors:

  • Dark Forest Green
  • Medium Green
  • Black
  • Light Olive or Khaki

These colors were carefully selected to match Sweden's evergreen forests, moss-covered rocks, and natural vegetation throughout much of the year.

Designed for Northern Europe

M90 performs particularly well in:

  • Boreal forests
  • Pine woodlands
  • Rocky terrain
  • Mixed woodland
  • Northern European landscapes

Its large geometric shapes remain effective across varying distances while maintaining excellent concealment in Sweden's unique environment.

Variants of M90

Over the years, Sweden has introduced several versions of the M90 family to support different operational requirements.

These include:

  • M90 Woodland
  • M90 Desert
  • M90 Snow Overwhite
  • Specialized vehicle and equipment camouflage

Each version preserves the distinctive geometric appearance that has become synonymous with Swedish military camouflage.

A Worldwide Favorite

Although M90 remains closely associated with Sweden, its unique appearance has earned a loyal following among military collectors, outdoor enthusiasts, airsoft players, and camouflage enthusiasts around the world.

Its bold geometric style is instantly recognizable and unlike nearly any other military camouflage currently in service.
