Pattern History: Brushstroke

Rhodesian Brushstroke camouflage was developed during the 1960s for the armed forces of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and became one of the most effective bush camouflage patterns ever fielded. Designed specifically for the rugged African savanna and thornveld, the pattern features bold brushstroke shapes in green, brown, and tan that blend naturally with the dry grasses, scrub, and woodland terrain of southern Africa. It gained legendary status during the Rhodesian Bush War (1964–1979), where it was worn by the Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI), Selous Scouts, Rhodesian African Rifles (RAR), Special Air Service (SAS), and other elite counterinsurgency units.

Praised for both its effectiveness and distinctive appearance, Rhodesian Brushstroke remains one of the most recognizable camouflage patterns ever produced. Its success influenced later African military camouflage designs and continues to be admired by military historians, collectors, and outdoor enthusiasts around the world. More than half a century after its introduction, Rhodesian Brushstroke stands as an enduring symbol of innovation in camouflage design and one of the defining military patterns of the late Cold War era.
